no, they have everything to do with each other.  any magnetic field
effects convergence.  in fact, if you look at the back of a large color
picture tube there are usually small permanent magnets glued on to help
convergence and geometry.  also, it's not necessarily the mask that gets
magnetized, more often it's the steel mounting band around the tube and
other steel parts of the unit in question.  and yes, i am very, very
familiar with monitors and how they work.  magnetism also causes
"purity" problems which is also another way of saying it's a convergence
problem.  convergence on modern monitors is primarily adjusted with
fixed magnets on the neck, in older designs there was another group of
deflection coils that did much the same thing.
