it is generally a bad way to do things, you can easily make things
worse.  what you want is a proper degaussing coil driven off of the ac
power supply, much like the built in degaussing circuit.  waving a
magnet around is definitely the hard way to do things and you are likely
to make it worse and add other magnetized areas unless you use
considerable finesse.
