As an old school person who used to work on color graphics equipment, you can use a device called a degaussing coil. It's a large coil of copper wire, hooked to a AC outlet via a switch. Most old-time TV repair shops should have one. What it does is establish a large magnetic field when energized. Interacting with a smaller magnetic field on a CRT, it removes stray magnetics on the CRT.
Here's the procedure: 1. Remove all sensitive magnetic components (disk drives, mechanical watches, diskettes, etc). 2. Turn on the system, if you want to see pretty colors on your CRT. :-) 3. Turn it on with the coil about 5 feet away from the screen, with the coil parallel to the screen. 4. Move it in "half coil diameter" circles toward the screen, keeping the coil parallel to the front of the CRT, until you're an inch or so away. 5. Cover the entire screen as you move the coil in circles. The screen may twist and display weird colors. This is normal. 6. Reverse the procedure, still moving the coil in circles in the same direction, moving away from the CRT. 7. When you see no effect on the CRT from your coil (5 feet or so), rotate the coil 90 degrees, so it's edge on to the CRT, and switch it off. If done properly, you should have nice uniform color across the screen. If not, repeat the procedure. It won't hurt the CRT. If all else fails, pack up your Color Compact, take it to the TV repair shop, and have him degauss it for ya. Give him $5-10 for his trouble. As with all home-done repairs, your mileage may vary, I'm not responsible, no warranty is expressed or implied, etc. I hope this helps.
