i forgot to mention, use electrical tape or cable ties to hold the coil
together.  you should wind up with 4 thick bundles of wire from the
original single bundle.  the degaussing coil is near the front of the
picture tube, usually held in with cable ties or metal clamps or
something else clever, sometimes you do pretty much have to remove the
crt to get at it but not usually.  of course after you cannibalize the
broken tv you can put it back with the trash, minus the very useful
degaussing coil.
