the pram battery isn't the problem, it's the ram. to be more helpful, the contact fingers get oxidized with age and don't make good contact. what you want to do, being careful of static, is pull the ram back out, and polish the silver fingers with a clean pencil eraser (not a pen eraser, they are too abrasive), and then of course carefully blow the eraser dust away. this is actually a trick techs used even before memory simms. the fingers should be somewhat shiny, if it doesn't work the first time try it again, in a few cases i've had to do it 3 or 4 times, probably because i was doing a quick job of it.
