Ah, that was the hint I was hoping for! Minix is well known as an educational operating system. It is the platform originally used by Linux Thorvalds to get the first version of Linux running. And the best of all: You can download it free and it is very compatible with old Macs (in fact it is not very compatible with newer Macs...)
