Thanks so much to all who gave advice about soldering and other matters! I really appreciate the fact that people here are so generous with their time and knowledge.
I visited the Radio Shack 5 minutes from my house and they came through handsomely. I picked up a 15V grounded iron, if that's not hot enough I will try out the 30 or 40 volt ungrounded type instead -- also got lots of other soldering toys. I have lots of practice materials to tackle before I go anywhere near the actual analog board I want to work on. I haven't done this since I was 12, looking forward to trying it again. I wonder whatever happened to the AM radio I built back then? Sara -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
