you can probably flush out the old lubricant with wd-40, which is mostly solvent. the oil it leaves isn't very good, i'd rinse the oil out with rubbing alcohol or everclear and relube with a good, but fairly thin grease on most of it. i like white lithium from and auto parts store myself. or of course you can check the swaplist for a new drive or just post a wanted ad. of course a replacement drive may do the same thing. you might try just relubricating it before cleaning, it may have just lost the lube, and even if it hasn't fresh grease will help soften up the gum so it comes off better or stops being a problem. i'd definitely try the relube first. just pull it out and manually insert and eject a few times to see what moves and needs lube, and clean and relube the worm gear in back that moves the head, sometimes they collect hair and other fibers and just don't move properly. if you've got tech tool i believe it has a good floppy exercise/test program, you can also of course run it with the case open and try to see what's binding.
