OK, pickle, you asked for it!

According to the OED (Oxford English Dictionary, for the unlettered among
you), the following:

wadge dial. 'A large loose bundle' (Eng. Dial. Dict.)
1860: The unhappy children [Blue-coat boys] ... are compelled ... to turn
their skirts up and gird them in a great hot wadge about their loins.
1862: That monstrous wadge of a dressing gown.

wodge [? Vulgar alteration of wedge: cf wedge. sb. 4] A lumpy
protuberant object. Hence wodgy solid, bulky.
1907: Not a London thin-bread-and-butter tea, but a great wodgy six-sliced
repast.
1922: A 'wodge' in his left breast-pocket.

wedge {about a paragraph of etymological text and characters.
Gist is that from Common Teutonic and Old High German, the term refers to a
wdge-shaped object.} ... <sb. 4> A lump or cake of any solid substance
{there follow usage citations from 1577 to 1833}

I wish I could reproduce all the lexical characters from the etymology of
'wedge', but you'll just have to find your own copy of the OED to read it
in the original.
