Only if you don't *want* to upgrade the analogue board to VGA support and thus
800x600 resolution...this requires some minor mods to the board, of course, but

More to the point, PPPoE is basically nonexistent on older Macs, so any DSL ISP
that uses PPPoE will require that you purchase a router - I recommend Netgear -
in order to handle the PPPoE issue.  This has the side benefit of allowing you
to connect multiple Macs to one DSL connection, however.

Cable modem connections likely won't be any problem at all.

Anything Ethernet-based with a Mac driver, too, with (possibly) a
LocalTalk-Ethernet bridge.

I find anything after 7.1 restrictively slow and RAM hogging.
