Hi list. Previously I reported problems with the IIfx-ply (updating the SE/30 with a ROM SIMM from the venerable Mac IIfx). My initial test of this went south, but I've recently given it another go. And lo and behold, it works.
When I tried it the first time, when I though it was'nt working, the screen had apx. 50 horisontal lines and made funny mechanical "noises" from either the harddrive and/or floppy. I had, however, also upgraded the mashine from 8 to 128 megs of ram, and installed a new drive as well. Oh well, I put back the original se/30 chip, and everything worked - although slow to boot. I then tried it again, and booted the mashine with the SE/30 chip. 1. Reinstalled the OS (7.5.3) and hacked it according to specs. 2. Power off, disassemble unit. 3. Old chip out, IIfx in. 4. Re-assemble. 5. Power up - and wait! After a couple of minutes, it started to boot the OS. Apparently, it DOES take forever, with or without the IIfx chip, to boot with all that RAM. And the stripes still appear a boot, but other than that, everything is fine. So for all it's worth, I'm sorry that I did'nt check more thoroughly the first time. And as a last remark, my SE730 is (or WAS) an SE that was upgraded in '90 with a new motherboard and casing. And the chip is soldered on the motherboard. So there you have it!
