It's not a pad, usually just a switch.  That could be
worn out.  Maybe run the case through the dishwasher,
depending on how dirty it is.  Other than that, the
mouse was designed to be able to last for years.  

(Well, the Apple ADB mice.  I don't know about the
cheap dell\m$ ones.)
