This actually works! If you have an SE/30 you got for FREE, you can
do this without guilt!

I have washed lots of circuit boards OUT of their machines (ie
motherboards etc), and given that the stainless steel kitchen sink I
wash them in is grounded via the plumbing, I've been lucky re CMOS
static issues. It gets rid of the build-up of grime, smoke, flux
residue, and general grot that builds up in these things. Many techs
claim faster performance (which I can't corroborate), and I can
testify to the reliability of a washed board; it really does seem to
help. I used to do the same thing with my LPs (remember those
anyone?), but NOT in a dishwasher unless you want em to look like
deep-fried wontons. Windex, or a very weak detergent solution will be
fine.

The SE/30 is also a great candidate for opening up and cleaning
thouroughly, ideally with compressed air (washing the CRT can ground
the tube and actually cause picture stability problems, so there is a
some risk involved in wet-washing the entire unit). Be sure to blast
out the floppy drive if nothing else, preferably from the front, and
don't be shy about it. The compact cases seem to be designed to
ventilate the unit via the floppy slot, and I've found some
monster-sized dust bunnies jammed in these floppy drives. You can
expect unreliable reads on these.

In case you haven't heard, do NOT touch the picture tube or any wires
on it; even the 9" B+W tube is charged with around 10 000 V after the
unit has been on, and it retains voltage for a long time afterwards.
I personally prefer not to ground them out (in spite of the
satisfying spark!) because it can cause picture instability,
requiring you to readjust the tube. If you're just going in and out
quickly, don't bother discharging it.

Good call, Matt!
