It's also likely that the CD was burned at a high enough speed that the LC575's pickup circuitry simply isn't strong enough to get a signal. When CDs are read, the laser is bounced off the reflective layer of the CD and read by a detector. That detector has a finite sensitivity, and the older the drive, the lower the sensitivity tends to be. CD-Rs and CD-RWs have much lower reflectivity than commercially-pressed CD-ROMs (something like 20% for CD-R, 10-15% for CD-RW, and 80-95% for CD-ROM), which causes the pickup circuit no end of problems in getting a useful signal.
