Boy, ain't I stupid. It turned out the whine I was hearing was from the 
power supply for my external hard drive. I was backing it up yesterday, 
and fired up my SE/30 without it and it was pretty quiet. I've now got my 
1 gig hard drive in an Apple 20 SC case, and the only noise is the turbo 
powered fan they put in this case. This thing really moves some air! But 
the noise is quieter and not so high pitched. 

Next time I crack the case on this computer, I'm going to put a 500M HD 
in it and put my everyday apps on it, so I won't need to fire up this 
external as often.
