Shouldn't do. I've used several modem-sharing setups this way and they can
work pretty well; I've had 20-odd users on a single 56K modem.

If you have a modem connection on a PC, try WinGate from deerfield.net.
It's fast and simple.

If you have a spare PC box, try a Linux firewall. Fast and free.
Smoothwall (from www.smoothwall.org) makes this stupidly easy and you
need NO Linux or Unix or firewalling knowledge at all to make it work. Its
integrated web cache, Squid, actually speeds up Web access for 2-3 people
sharing a line. Every time you open msn.com, all the graphics & frames
come from the cache, not down the line; if she reads Dilbert after you've
read Dilbert, she gets the cached copy, keeping the line open.

Sadly, this is a much harder task under MacOS.

And yes, I use the web at 9,600bps; I have Opera on my Psion PDA and my
cellphone gives me a wireless Internet connection. It's not fun, but it's
very useful in a pickle...
