Before OS X, you could place a specially formatted file named 
StartupScreen in the System Folder (not in any subfolder). But there were 
at least 2 formats -- the original black&white uncompressed format and a 
color version. I use DeBabelizer to create the black and white ones 
suitable for a Plus, and GraphicConverter to create the color ones; I'm 
sure there are many other programs that export these formats. The black 
and white file is always the same exact size (about 22K). I believe the 
color format is base on PICT and varies in size according to the 
dimensions and amount of detail in the picture.
