Before you tear two machines apart to do the transplant, I'd try this.

Boot from the Classic's ROM. To do this hold the Apple, Option, x, and o keys down 
when you turn the machine on. I believe it boots to system 6.0.3.

Then put the floppy in question into the drive and see if it reads it. If it doesn't 
put a floppy you know is good into the drive and see if it reads that. If it can't 
read them and you have an 800k floppy lying around try that. It's possible someone may 
have switched out a SuperDrive for an 800k drive.
