Hello! I've just recently joined the list - primarily because I have acquired a Mac Plus.
Now, I'm a fairly recent "switcher", I fell in love with the Macintosh about two and a half years ago. I owned a PowerTower Pro for two years and then bought a shiny new iMac G4 when I'd saved enough clams. The other day, a friend was about to throw away an old Mac Plus and I offered to take it off her hands. I've decided to get it running and have some fun with it, but I have to admit - it's a lot different from my iMac! I only have the unit itself and the keyboard - no mouse, but I decided to power it up anyway. Digging up an old power cord I had, I plugged it in and turned it on and.... not much happened. : ( Sure there was a beep or two and some humming, but the only thing I saw on the screen was a single-pixel white line down the center of the screen. This seemed bad. Is the screen kaput? I don't know. So I unplugged it and opened the case. Yikes! I don't recognize anything! No PCI bus or IDE ribbons! - okay, I didn't really expect to find those, but I'd hoped to find at least something familiar! One thing I didn't find was a hard drive, which probably accounts for the uneventful first power-up. I also found a number of holes which seemed to be labelled as screen adjusters. Obviously I need a tool of some sort but I didn't think sticking a screw driver in there would be particularly wise. If I could adjust these, could I get something more exciting on the screen than a single line? I've been to the LEM site and found a lot of helpful things, but they usually assume that one has their Mac Plus at least working. Unfortunately I don't have any non-HD disks, bootable or otherwise. I'm sure by now you're all laughing at me so... Can anyone tell me how to get it started?? I'm quite familiar with most computers from the last 10 years or so. Also, I do live fairly close to at least one second-hand mac store and I know my way around eBay. I'd appreciate any startup tips you may have.
