Hi!

As you know, my only Macintosh is a 68k-based Classic with System 6.0.7. I
have downloaded lately a bunch of old software from the Vieuxmac archive,
only to find that all of it is compressed with StuffIt 5, that requires
System 7.5 (rats!). I have read in this list before that you can install
StuffIt 5 in System 7.5 and then carry it into System 7.1 and run it, but I
don't like to turn my happy Classic into a slow machine, and thus I won't
install System 7 (or higher inside it).

Is it possible to create a bare System 7.1 boot disk and put StuffIt 5 in
it? Does a 1.44 Mb diskette have enough space to fith both of them? If not,
I suppose it could be done on two diskettes, or putting StuffIt in the
harddisk and using the diskette only to boot the Mac. And, more important,
if it is possible, would anybody with a System 7.5 machine be kind enough
to make a disk image for us to use? I bet I'm not the only one with this
problem, judging by the messages sent to this list lately about the same
topic...

Oh, and perhaps there is an easier way to uncompress StuffIt 5 files in a
Mac with System 6. Any ideas?

By the way, tomorrow I'll buy the needed parts to connect the 540 Mb hard
disk to the Classic. They are a 3.5" external SCSI box that fits under the
Mac, a DB25 to HPDB50 cable (the HPDB50 is the SCSI connector used by the
box I plan to buy), and an USB to HPDB50 SCSI adapter (to connect the hard
disk to my Windows XP box). I have read that the latest version of TransMac
has support for USB drives, so I shouldn't have any problem with this last
item. I'll tell you more when I have a chance to play with my new toys :-)
.

Greetings,

Antonio Rodrguez (Grijan)
