Hi again! First of all, I apologize to those of you that think this matter is off-topic in this list. This isn't compact Mac-specific, but also applies to every Mac with a small amount of memory. Just let me know if you find this and off-topic...
In my Classic, I have MultiFinder turned on allways (I love to open several applications at once). Because I have "only" 2 Mb of RAM, I'm allways looking at the Finder's about box, to control memory usage. And I have discovered that there are several small games I have that are given a fixed space of 384 Kb, even if they only use a small part of it. When I opened these agems with ResEdit, I saw that they didn't have a SIZE resorce - and probably because of that, the System is giving them a standard chunk of 384 Kb (perhaps the amount of free memory in a Mac 512?). Well, after this, the next step is quite logical: I tried to copy a SIZE resource of an old game and paste it in one of the memory-hug games and adjust the required and minimum memory sizes to the ones I feel would be enough to run it safely. And it worked! Now, I can open more games without expanding the memory. I know - it's a bit dangerous tweaking this, because if you don't give enough memory to the program, it can crash or make the system crash. But I have found that trying the game in several scenarios and looking often at the Finder's about box memory usage bars, you can determine it safely and obtain a little extra memory. And I don't think making this with applications (like SuperPaint, MS Word or ResEdit) would be a good idea, except perhaps if you know you aren't going to open large documents with them. It also doesn't make sense if you aren't using MultiFinder: if you use standard Finder, all memory that isn't allocated for your application or game is, simply, unused. I just wanted to let you know this. Perhaps you are an 1 Mb Plus user that love MultiFinder as much as I do :-) , and this can be of use for you. Any suggestions, corrections, commentaries? I'll welcome them! Greetings, Antonio Rodrguez (Grijan) -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
