Sounds even easier than my suggestion. Here's a question. Can you use
phonenet adapters to connect macs in different romms of a house, using the
in wall phone wiring of a house, and instead of connecting a resistor as a
terminator, plus a phone into the adapter as a pass through for calls?

Well if your external hardware includes another Mac with serial and 
ethernet ports you can use Localtalk bridge control panel from Apple.

Put Localtalk bridge on the other Mac. Connect your Classic to the 
other Mac (printer cable will do). Connect the other Mac to the 
ethernet and Bob's your uncle.

It's free from Apple.
