Dear Compact Macs:

Ok, well, I have a laundry list of problems I wish to seek help with.
I recently received a mac SE/30 MB (thanks snook!) and upgraded my SE
FDHD. However, when I boot up it says

the floppy in the external drive is unreadable. Do you want to
initialize this floppy? I don't have an external floppy drive
connected.

so I click eject, and then it says it again, so I hit eject... forever.
I found this problem and its solution on the Mac SE Support pages.
Here is the Answer they give:

This was a very common problem with SE logic boards. It's caused by an
RC filter that is shorting out. It's a 20-pin DIP package between the
internal and external floppy drive connectors. The Apple part number is
115-0002. If you don't want to use the external port, an easy no-cost
fix is to just remove the damaged component. If you want the external
port to work, you'll have to replace the part.

So, sounds good, but, I am wondering if anyone else has experienced
this and perhaps found a different/better solution or if they have had
the same problem and can verify that this works? This is an SE/30 MB,
not an SE one. I think that the part he is talking about is the yellow
chip between the internet floppy connecter and the outside ports, but
there are 2 other yellow chips next to the SCSI connecter that are
possibilities, can anyone verify the chip that controls the external
floppy drive?. Is the solution suggested to clip the chip off, or do I
need to do some special soldering?

Ok, next problem

On the same machine, the screen has two problems. Number 1, the
monitor shakes a little while on. More than normal I mean (all SE
monitors I have seen seemed to shake a little but this is excessive).
it flickers especially when reading and writing to the SCSI HDD or a
floppy. Problem number 2, the screen is dark, even with brightness all
the way up it is not as bright as my other SEs. It is usable, I just
hope there is an easy way to increase the brightness. I also mention
it because I think it may be related to problem 1. I did my homework
on this one too and the best I could find is that I may have to solder
something on the analog board. Does anybody have any more advise for
me?

Ok, one more problem. I have a different Mac SE that has a cracked
screen tube. the glass has broken near where it connects to the
vertical board. I have a mac 512 that has a nice working screen. Are
the two compatible? Could I swap out the CRT from the mac 512 into the
SE?

Thank you once again for all the help the members of the list have
already given me. The more I know the more I can solve problems for
others instead of trying to fix them for myself.
