Yo compacters everywhere,

Our David <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> askz:

< ...but your comment about the SE's hard drive noises intrigues me ... I have an SE
with 20 MB hard drive... and I've recently wondered if the hard drive is defective, or
if it is close to failing, as it is very noisy! It's kinda "squeaky" as it accesses
information. Is that normal?>

Normal? Dunno, but very common. You see Dave, some of these early 20MB drives were
made by long dead companies now the source of legends. Some like Rodime or MiniScribe
sounded like they were on their deathbed the day they were new. Waye backe then,
nobody knew exactly the best way to build a hard drive. They must have tried a
bazillion ideas and what you heard from any one drive was that drive designer's idea
of how it oughta work. Rodime isn't with us anymore. I have two perfectly good Rodime
20 MB half height drives. I have tossed a dozen or more into the trash dead as could
be with a few still making their decidely weird noises. MiniScribes by the score have
gone out with them. Is your drive close to failing? Dave, all drives of this age are
close to failing. You might want to find a later era and much more reliable Quantum
40MB drive and prepare it for use in your SE before your current drive fails utterly.

Bill
