Well actually it is safe (and has been done by me many times) to add or
remove PCI devices in a PC while it's on (after being deactivated in the
Device Manager without a "restart the computer" message)... figured the same
was true for an in-a-coma Mac as well, but for anything :-) .

Again, it seems that the RAM is simply not resetting correctly... there are
no signs of damaged parts, leaking battery, dirty circuits, or anything
damaged on the board at all... but it is still curious to note that there is
no speaker sound even when it IS working, though sound does work through
headphones (and the speaker on the analog board is conencted)...
