That should never be done in any electronic equipment!
Trust me.

The vram comes off the main ram on a classic so what good would it do anyway?

I should have intercepted you dishwasher deed before you did it to advise you to look for stains near any of the electrolytic caps. Otherwise not much to advise if you don't have test equipment or spare components to swaap in.

He was advised to check for staining around any caps while checking for any battery leak damage.
Running it through a dishwasher sort of removes any signs of cap leakage I would imagine.
For what little its worth both my classics will boot without a battery with the clock running of course, the swiched AC line also comes from the board and not the socket.
I'd follow the standard procedure of cleaning the pins on the ram/rom and reseating. The fact the clock on this machine gets stuck (?) to me is a indication of something more hardware related than just the battery. Borrow the battery from another mac and see what difference, if any, there is.

The Transmac link for version 4.2 is dead it seems gamba, gotta work hard to find one on your site though. ;)
