<..., but I'm once again living proof, emphasis on living, that the CRT incident may not be as terribly deadly as any have reported.> Yea Jeffy! Way to go Dude! This experiene can be bracing, shocking, even alarming. I am sure there must be the one person out there that has found this fatal. There is always that one person who is going to die just futzing with a flashlight battery. Unless fitted with a pacemaker or some other indicator of susceptibility, there is no cause for the irrational level of fear over this CRT discharge subject. As a once upon a time RADAR tech, I have gotten my fingers across the CRT joltage of far larger CRTs than a Mac, indeed across the pulse forming network of magnetrons. The smoke from my fingers stunk for a while and the holes in the ends of my fingers could be lined up so you could see through them - that was sort of cute. These experiences even left me sitting engaged in heavy breathing for quite a while to ponder why the hell I was doing this kind of work. Discomforting? In the extreme. But mortal? NO! Now, don't anyone go try this stunt just because Jeff, I, or many others live. This experience is not virtual. It is not a video game nor a thrill ride. And there are texts and training on the safety aspects of just how to go about this work. A real danger is that screwdriver in your other hand. You may reactively throw it with great force. If someone is in the way, they, rather than you, will get hurt. Jeff has learned something here and shared the experience so that we can all learn from it. This is good for gaining knowledge to safely work on our beloved compacts. Thanks for the share Jeff. And, yes, I have received and apply lots of safety training on this subject including preparation for such events when they do occur. So, bring on the straffing. I would especially like to hear from people that have actually died from a CRT discharge. Bill -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
