I took your advice, supported by a Mac using friend whom believed it was
well worth doing [as the date on the battery was that of the machine 1993].

However I am still viewing the sad little fellow icon. I have pester the
herementioned friend into spotting me a set of Mac OS 7.0.1 discs.

Strangely enough the classic I purchased also for $15 from a "Tip Shop" also
displayed the flashing question mark. Not having a genuine MAC boot disk I
put a Win98 boot disk in. The disk ejected as you would imagine and it
proceeded to boot from the hard drive. I replaced the battery and it has not
faulted since.
