You compacters everywhere:

We are beginning to see a few questions here about a variety of
dysfunctions with Classic IIs ranging from crackling audio, memory
management, startup problems and others. Being in the midst of setting up
seventeen Classic IIs all as one project, I am seeing a pattern here.
Simply, each Classic II that has a non-software problem has shown the same
leakage of capacitor goo onto the motherboard. Sometimes the leakage is
obvious. Sometimes you gotta look close around ALL of those tiny aluminum
can capacitors. There are maybe four or so "farms" of them about the 'board
with a few strays. Just a dulling of the normally bright green substrate is
all you need to know cleanup time is here. In all but one case, a thorough
cleaning of this goo restored the 'board to service. I haven't tried the
dishwasher yet. I have used liberal amounts of isopropyl alcohol and even
more liberal use of Q-tips - gobs of them. Other Classic IIs of this
project have shown leakage with no dysfunction. I have two concerns with
what I see. First is that if left unattended too, this capacitor goo will
etch into the traces and leads to distruction. The second is that these
capacitors, as with other compacts, are reaching the limits of their life.
For now, clean, Clean, CLEAN! For the future, can we get a spec and source
on these caps for their replacement?

Bill
