First, if I remember correctly, the size of the HD is determined by the system software rather than anything hard wired into the machine itself. Post that one up on the list for a sure answer. If you are to replace the floppy drive, you would need ROMs from an SE FDHD (which stands for Floppy Drive - High Density) which supports the 1.4 MB drive in SEs that have them from the factory. Unfortunately, this isn't always the best thing to do, and maybe getting a whole motherboard from an FDHD equipped one would do. Still, SE FDHDs themselves are cheap and you could get a whole other machine for that. If I remember, there is a PC program that can write mac disk images to 800ks in mac format....ask the list on this one. Alot cheaper than attempting to get a new motherboard for the SE. I would normally recommend 6.0.8 for use on the SE, but if you want to do Email, 7.1 and up would probably be a good choice. As for your 512ks floppy drive, crack the case and see if it is a 400k or 800k. You will know because an 800k is real slim in height, and the 400k is a beast. If you need a replacement 400k, ebay would be a good place to look. Hope this helps!

Sorry, it wasn't me!
Actually though, I've got a 512k and an SE I want to get running and I need
a bit more advice on them. Maybe you can tell me a few things....
The SE has a 20MB HD and 4MB RAM
Is there a size limit on the internal SCSI HD size for the SE? Junkyard
Jeff's has some up to 1 GB cheap, very tempting!
What do I need to do to replace the 800K floppy with an auto-inject 1.44mb
Superdrive on the SE? I need this to swap disks after I download to my
PeeCee to put them on the SE
My 512k is needs a floppy drive (400K???) and also needs a backup battery
(goes in the back beneath a small door)
What OS is best for each Mac? I mostly will use them for games, word
processing & email, light web surfing
Thanks for your help and advice, hope you find the "other" Gary
Kitchen....maybe someday I will write some code :)
