2 Gb for System 6 and 7.0/7.1 . System 7.5.3 (I think) raised it to 8 Gb.
Anyway, 1 Gb is more than enough for a compact Mac, I think.

Only if you are doing intensive calculations (spreadsheets, scientific analysis,
3D render...). I don't think that a compact is the best machine to do those
tasks, but still it's *fun* to upgrade it ;-) .
