I recently xplanted a 575 mobo into a 550, and upgraded the memory from 20mb to 128mb. The System I'm running is 7.5.3.Now here's what I can't figure out. When I had 20mb, I looked at About This Macintosh, and noticed that all but approximately 4mb out of 20mb was in use by System Software. OK I figured, let's check the Memory Control Panel. A check revealed that: Disk Cache - 32k, Always On Virtual Memory - Off, Available on disk 14mb, Available Built-In Memory 24mb 32-bit Addressing - Off RAM Disk - Off v7.5.5 I tried changing these settings On/Off, but the System still hogs almost every bit of memory available. After replacing the 20mb SIMM with a 128mb EDO SIMM recommended for this system from Coast To Coast Memory, the Mac takes what seems like forever, over 2 minutes to finish booting. Apparently it must mow through all this RAM every time it starts up, and there have been a few bomb crashes. About This Macintosh again shows almost all memory consumed by System Software. It reports: Total Memory: 135,168k Largest Unused Block: 4,900k System Software: 130,083k The memory usage bar is almost completely grayed over, only a sliver is left representing the 4,900k left for use Also, any programs launched take a long time to start up. The CD drive is extremely sluggish, the CPU is so bogged down with almost no memory left. You can still move the pointer and stare at the wristwatch, everything goes in slow motion. Anybody got any ideas? Possibly a corrupted System folder? I do not have 7.5 on disk, and my only way to get it will be thru my PC via download, how do I get it on a floppy(ies) or CD for the Mac, if I need to wipe the HD and start over?
