I just completed the upgrade of my Color Classic with a Performa 575 MOBO and the 640x480 upgrade. However, when I adjust the controls to stretch out my horizontal dimensions, I get the barrel distortion common with this upgrade. The recommended solution is to add a capacitor to position CL26. Stuart seems to recommend starting with a 1nF capacitor, see if that fixes it, and if not, replace it with a 2nF, 3nF and 4nF until the problem goes away.
However, I would really rather not stress the system (or myself) with taking it apart or putting it back together up to four times, as the odds of my snapping something fragile like the CRT increase each time I start yanking on the guts.
Can I just install a 4nF capacitor and have a 98 percent chance of success in eliminating barrel distortion, or do I really have to start at 1nF and go up step by step?
