As Gomer Pyle would say, "We'll I'll be..."
The way to REALLY test if term power is the issue would be to put some of the other drives on the chain with the term powered drive at the end. With all the other givens such as proper ID's, they all should light up. I remember now something in a cloudy corner of my brain about Pluses not supplying sufficient term power.
When I was looking up 2 of the drives that I can't get running on my Plus, a Quantum ProDrive LPS 240S and a Quantum Fireball 1280 (both Apple ROM'd) I found this explanation at Maxtor's website (they bought Quantum and are amazingly still proving tech support): http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/products/scsi/legacy/jumper_definitions.htm
TP - Termination Power (Differs from Termination Enable)
Termination Power ensures that there is a sufficient level of power along the
entire SCSI bus. It is recommended that the last device on the SCSI bus have
the Termination Power jumper installed. All intermediate devices on the SCSI
bus, between the host and last device, typically should have no jumper installed
on Termination Power.
Neither one of my Quantum drives has a TP jumper. If you could do the above experiment, that would be great. If I has a TP device that was reasonable I'd jump right on it (Seagate Barracuda 4.55 gb that's known to be Mac hostile? Don't think so...)
Stepyen
The disk was a Quantum Pro-Drive LT. Same size as the one I tried, but THIS one has on-board term power. The other Quantum Pro Drive did not. IT was marked as just "Pro-Drive". No LT.
To my surprise, it mounted on the desktop when I booted from a System 6.0.8. floppy disk.
8> snip!
Upon reboot, IT WORKED!!!! Again and again.....
So, Mark, the secret will be finding a drive smaller than a GIG, and making sure it has the term power on the controller.
