Ping from somewhere else is not a good test for TCP/IP on Macs, because the default is not to load the TCP/IP software unless an app is running that uses it. On modern Macs (8.6+) I verify TCP/IP with the Use a Network Time Server option in the Date and Time control panel. On older systems I think we used to launch Netscape 1 or 2 and visit a web site. Also, only Open Transport supports modern DHCP for obtaining its IP; if you are running MacTCP you will have to assign an address manually, and the coding is kind of weird. I'm told the proper way to install Open Transport is 1.1 first, then upgrade to 1.2. Since AppleTalk is working, all that stuff about needing a hub and auto-sensing does not apply to your case. If AppleTalk works and you can actually transfer files to/from a server or other Mac, your hardware and cabling is fine. -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
