Little kids do this all the time. All you have to do is move the Finder
or the System file out of the System Folder. Lots of other logical things
can go wrong to give you the flashing question mark without a hardware
failure. I always listen to the drive; then put in a boot floppy with
SCSI probe and Disk First Aid, and sometimes run the SilverLining hard
drive test before replacing the drive.

Good point, I forgot about little kids :). I probably should have phrased that differently - It's improbable that a knowledgeable computer user would accidentally screw up the system to the point where the system won't boot. And, yes, I do run tests on any drive before replacing it, but I have noticed that (at least on the machines I have found), that a dead drive seems to be the most common failure. (runner up is "vertical line disease") Of course, I generally deal with SE's, and their hard drives aren't exactly reliable. "Stiction" is a big problem for those.
