My name is Matt, and I'm a Mac Addict. :-)
I just got my first Macintosh 512k and I'm dying to get it up and running, but it seems to be having problems. The fact that I don't really know what I'm doing with such an old machine probably doesn't help. My first Mac was a Performa 6300CD in my Sophomore year of high school, so I'm not used to this no hard drive booting off a floppy stuff.
My 512k came with an external floppy drive and a whole bunch of accessories. For now I just want to boot it up and get it running. I've been searching the net for hours trying to find some help, but pretty much everything I've found starts off with, "Boot up and check what version of XYZ you're running." Not helpful with a machine that won't boot.
When I turn it on I get a flashing ?-disk icon. I have a floppy labeled "Macintosh System Disk" with a date of 1984 on it, so I stuck that in and it ka-chunks and whirrs and tries to eject, over and over, while flashing an X-disk icon. It seems that the floppy drive is having trouble of some kind because disks are difficult to put in and it can't eject them on its own, I've got to grab them at just the right moment and pull them out. The external floppy is even worse, disks go in easier but they don't actually click in and nothing really happens. I can see little red lights in both floppy drives, but I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Its also got something rattling around in the case. I know that this isn't a good thing, but I'm a little wary of taking it apart to investigate. Not that I'm not experienced in disassembling and reassembling computers (i.e. I've got about a dozen PowerBook 500 series machines that I've torn down and rebuilt) its just that I really don't want to take any chances with this baby.
Any help, advice or recommendations that you guys may give will be appreciated.
Thanks!
Matt Muelver
