Question 2 - The MB has 4 simms on it, labeled Samsung KMM591000A-8. I've been unable to find out any information on these, does anyone know what size they are? Odds are they'd be 256kb simms, but the case looks like it's been opened many times, so I'm unsure.
The 1000 in the part number seems to say 1 MB each. But then . . .
Back in that era, one could pretty much count on a xxxx1000 being a 1 megabit DRAM and an xxxxx256 being a 256 kilobit DRAM chip. If there are eight of the KMM591000A-8 chips on the SIMM, then it is probably a 1 MB SIMM. If there are only two, then it is a 256KB SIMM.
Just for grins I started writing down all the chips on the board and researched them, attempting to find out more info. Some, like the CPU, are easy to find - others like the AMD SCSI chip was tough and still more like the chips from VLSI I havent been able to find any info about - does anyone know if someone has done something similar which lists all the chips and their functions?
Try Zilog for the SCSI and the serial chips. I think they still have data sheets up for them. The 53C80 SCSI and the 85C30 Serial chip were either widely licensed or reverse engineered or something, because many many companies made them including Zilog, NCR (now LSI Logic) and AMD.
The 53C80 saw a very long life in the Mac starting in the Mac Plus and running through the '030 machines until it was replaced with the 53C96 in the Quadras and later machines.
