How hard is it to replace the CRT in a compact Mac? Assuming I have access to another one to canabalize (non-working, of course)...

As long as you have a long torx tool, very easy. Just disconnect the connections, remove CRT, replace, re-make. If the connectors to the yoke are different, then you'll need to keep the original yoke. Some tweaking of the display may be needed afterwards. Getting to one of the torx screws which holds the CRT in place can be made easier if you partially remove the analogue board of at least some compact models.

Usual warning to be very careful about having a compact Mac switched on when the case is off. With the SE and all models earlier, leave the Mac for 24 hours before opening it up, as you'll need to remove the hi-voltage 'sucker' connection to the back of the CRT. Later models should have bleeding circuits to dissipate the charge. They can, rarely, become disfunctional, so I always remove the 'sucker' connection single-handedly, and while holding the rubber part, touch the metal part to ground. Never seen a spark yet, though! ;-)

If anyone tries to start yet another wretched thread about the dangers of CRTs in compact Macs, I shall call in a nuclear strike on their homes. Is that clear? It's ALL been heard before.
