It's not the suction cup that is the electrical connection, it's two  
little metal prongs that go into a hole in the glass to make the anode  
connection - it's like the way the top is held onto a glass christmas  
ornament. Discharge the tube, then peel back the suction cup, and you  
can see the metal clips. Use a screwdriver or something to push one  
clip towards the other, and try to get one side out, then pull the  
other side out.
