None of the suggestions are going to work since the error means that the make script could not detect the system you are on and thus is not going to compile without some make file hacking. Fink is the best option since it will have a build script for a MacOS X system already made out. That is the whole point of the fink project, to make UNIX utilities easy to build on OS X. Get fink and follow the instructions, if you need more help I can assist you. Or, you could simply download the MacOS X version that I already linked to.

Seeming as config resolves platform dependencies, I suggest adjusting the string for the PowerPC (Linux, NetBSD, and OpenBSD have been around for a while, so it should work). Endian and word alignment are quite different on different processors.

with problems in the source code than configure, because I understand
C (sometimes) and not contrived scripts.
