Both of those vintage printers are quite heavy, eBay is a bad idea. I have a LaserWritter II and it is very very heavy (maybe 60 lbs). Your best bet is to go to a thrift store or to some small computer stores that deals with selling used equipment, i've gotten deals on old apple equipment at those stores because they don't want mac "crap".

What would a good source for an inexpensive, functional Imagewriter

Alternatively, i'd be interested in a Laserwriter - perhaps to
recreate an early desktop publishing scenario...

Thrift stores are good sources for printers, particularly since ImageWriters and LaserWriters were quite common. Typical prices are $5 to $20 (depending upon where you go), and you will save on shipping.

ImageWriter and LaserWriter drivers have been included with Apple's
operating system since at least System 6, and I suspect much earlier.
The LaserWriter drivers will work with many non-Apple PostScript
printers (just make sure the printer supports LocalTalk).
