Sadly, neither of these are available to me - hacking the Apple driver
requires the non-free 5.4.2 driver.

Luckily, however, my NEC CD-ROM has free drivers available...these have
been installed, and the drive now works.  Thanks for the help - without
the prod towards FWB, I'd not have found the NEC drive.
