Thanks for the reminder about the Newlife, Jeff. There was also a
Newlife 2 upgrade that included video out, giving 640 * 480 mono on a
standard Mac or VGA display. All this from the humble "unexpandable"
512Ke... Does anyone have one that still works?

Yeah, I always wanted the upgrade with the video out, but it was several hundred dollars more than the less accomplished upgrade. It's hard to imagine now, but there was a time when the price difference between a 512Ke and a Plus or a 512Ke and a new Classic was enough that it was worth buying a 512Ke (or using one on hand) and the Newlife upgrade to get the Plus/Classic equivalent and save a couple hundred dollars.

The basic upgrade had a 68000 on board and provided a SCSI port and the eight SIMM sockets but RAM was still limited to 4 MB.

IIRC, the upgrade with the video was a 68030 upgrade and probably had the ability to take the machine to 16 MB using Virtual from Connectix and Mode 32. But I'm hazy on those details.

We still have one of the "basic" upgrades that made the 512Ke into a Plus/Classic equivalent. I haven't fired it up in a long time, but it should still work. When it was new I called Newlife (there are some errors in the jumper settings in their manual) and back then one actually got to speak to an engineer who worked on the product. He said that the 512Ke was a little faster than a plus with the upgrade in place and the SCSI was much faster than a Plus. Something about their board is more efficient. The 68000 is the same clock speed though. He didn't give me details and I wouldn't have understood them back then anyway.
