The code for the other platform simply takes up space on the hard drive. Whenever there are 68k and ppc implementations of the same code, only the one for your processor is actually "loaded" into memory. Yes, you can save many megabytes of disk space by stripping your system for 68k or ppc. But I don't believe any of the claims that this will save RAM memory or speed up your Mac.

I agree. Stripping unneeded code makes little or no difference to the size of the system heap or the speed the mac runs. For some of us who find small drives contain ample room, removing un-needed ppc code saves a good amount of dead-space.

I agree with Darren that 8.6 is better for most PowerMacs than 8/8.1. I've been upgrading a number of 5x00 all-in-ones to 8.6 for compatibility with software the school needs to use, and while these "compacts" remain sluggish (compared to other PowerMacs), they are not as bad as I feared they would be.

While the system is a personal choice there are sweet spots for each mac, eg: a Classic will run 7.1-7.5, the same mac running 6.08 will run rings around it.
