The code for the other platform simply takes up space on the hard drive. 
Whenever there are 68k and ppc implementations of the same code, only the 
one for your processor is actually "loaded" into memory. Yes, you can 
save many megabytes of disk space by stripping your system for 68k or 
ppc. But I don't believe any of the claims that this will save RAM memory 
or speed up your Mac.

I agree with Darren that 8.6 is better for most PowerMacs than 8/8.1. 
I've been upgrading a number of 5x00 all-in-ones to 8.6 for compatibility 
with software the school needs to use, and while these "compacts" remain 
sluggish (compared to other PowerMacs), they are not as bad as I feared 
they would be.
