AFAIK, "AppleTalk" is a set of mid-level protocols. It is independent of the
network media or other lower-level protocols, and provide services to
higher-level protocols like AppleShare file sharing or network games. When
it's run over a serial line (RS-232, RS-422, PhoneNet...) line, it's called
"LocalTalk". When it's run over Ethernet, it's called "EtherTalk". To make
things more fun, you can also run it on top of an TCP/IP network, or
encapsulate TCP/IP over AppleTalk (I don't know how it's called in those
cases)... In order to combine all those variants, there are both hardware
and software routers. The posibilities are large enough to keep you
entertained one rainy Sunday afternoon (or more than one ;-) ). Of course,
I'm not a Macintosh network expert, so if I'm wrong, please correct me.

Greetings,
