Agreed. There have always been two schools of thought on the matter.

School one is about finding or making a Compact of your liking to its most
pristine of operability. Clean, bleach, lube, adjust, repair until it works
as it did when new. Accepting its limits but liking them as the radically
different machines they were compared to DOS boxes.

School two, the alteration. SE in a MacPlus. CD ROM in an SE/30. iMac se/30.
SE/30 G4. On and on. I practice both schools. I love the Compacts for their
superiority over the PCs of that time. I get off on emailing with them and
telling folks about the experience.

Regarding the money spent  speed boosting, I say why NOT?  It's a hobby.
Go for it.
