Well I had grand illusions about writing a paper about this, but then I realized that it wasn't all that profound. But I figured I would share it with everyone in case there does happen to be a newbie like me out there that is trying to get this stuff working. Some things I learned while rebuilding my SE/30 that I got from eBAY: 1. Don't rebuild it if it works... This was the hardest lesson. 2. You can create read/write disk images in OSX via the disk utility. Then you can format those images with the Mac OS Standard (which is HFS) filesystem. Copy all your downloaded stuff to that disk image, then burn it to a CD. This is of course for people like me that don't have a floppy drive on their G4/G5. Obviously you need an external SCSI cd rom for the se/30... 3. The Disk Utility in OSX can convert .image (compact pro) files to .dmg files, which can then be ftp'd and written to a floppy disk on a linux machine via dd (dd if=filename.dmg of=/dev/fd0 bs=1440k). I suspect you could also use rawrite on a Windows box, but I have no need for Windows... Again this is helpful for those that don't have the $20 floppy drive (yes I am cheap) for OSX. Of course you could just burn those to a cd from the disk utility if you wanted. 4. HFS is NOT like any other filesystem in that is uses tags that tell the OS what kind of file it is, and therefore how to deal with it (application, text doc, etc). Copying files to an ext3 (for example) filesystem seems to be fine, but I couldn't figure out how to copy them onto an HFS formatted disk (mount -t hfs or hmount using the hfsutils) and make them work on the se/30 (with system 7.0.1). Using hfsutils (on linux) is helpful because of the hatttrib command which lets you adjust the file TYPE and CREATOR fields; of course you have to know what they are supposed to be in order to set them. I still had no joy (error 39). 5. If you start system 7 with the OSX boot cd in the cdrom it will mount it magically even though there doesn't appear to be a cd driver in the base OS. You can then unmount it and mount your cd that you created in step 2. I later found a cd driver that would let me mount any HFS formatted cd when the OS boots. 6. Don't try to install things from a read only filesystem (like a cd). Copy it to the hard drive and then install. Or try it first, and if you get errors then copy it to the hard drive before giving up. Things like stuffer and .sea files try to expand themselves in their current directory, which won't work.
I have some utils and urls if someone wants or needs them. This is getting to be pretty long so I won't take any more time.
