----------- SCSI voodoo. Sounds like a problem with termination.
As the 580 is IDE with a scsi port, its fairly obvious its scsi mis-configuration or not, if the screen is gray when it freezes termination may well be the problem.
Can Baily chain the zip to the external, if so what is the result. Looking for a screwless option.
